We're Sarah & Mike, a married couple and former Disney engineers. We have always been fascinated by wood and its natural beauty. Wood is a living material that has its own personality and history. It can tell stories of where it came from, how old it is, and what it has been through. Wood is also a renewable, biodegradable and versatile material that can be shaped, carved, stained and polished to create stunning effects.
We wanted to combine our love for wood with our love for technology and create something unique and awesome. Something that would not only sound incredible, but also look and feel great.
How We Got the Idea of Making Flat Panel Speakers with Wood
It all started when we were looking for a way to add some art and life to our home. We love music and we wanted to have a good sound system that would fill our space with immersive and enchanting audio. But we also wanted something that would fit our style and decor, something that would not take up too much floor space or look bulky and boring.
We started to research different types of speakers and we came across flat panel speakers. Unlike conventional speakers, flat panel speakers use a thin panel as the sound source instead of a cone-shaped driver. This allows them to deliver audio with minimal distortion and interference, as well as being lightweight and easy to install. They also have a sleek and modern design that can fit any decor.
But what really caught our attention was the idea of using wood as the panel material. We learned that certain tone woods have a natural resonance that make them ideal for producing sound, just like how a piano or a guitar works. The strings vibrate the wooden body, creating rich and harmonious tones. The same principle applies to Knot Audio's flat panel speakers. The wood panel vibrates the air, creating an immersive and enchanting sound like a high-end musical instrument.
We were intrigued by this idea and we decided to give it a try. We thought wood would add a touch of warmth and coziness to the sound and the appearance of our speakers. We also thought it would be a great way to showcase the natural beauty of local wood and its unique properties.
How We Handcraft Our High-Quality Speakers
We spent months experimenting with different species of wood to find the best ones for our speakers. After trying over 20 different species of wood, from common ones like pine and oak, to exotic ones like cherry and Baltic birch, we carefully selected the wood based on its color, grain, texture, and hardness. We also tested the wood for its durability, resistance to moisture and insects, and compatibility with our technology.
We sourced and will continue to source our materials locally, supporting our local lumber and saw mills. We believe in giving back to our community and reducing our environmental impact.
Our speakers are then handcrafted with attention to detail and quality. We used natural wood finishes to protect the wood and bring out its natural beauty. We also added some features to enhance the functionality and performance of our speakers, such as wireless connectivity and the ability to put your own posters or artwork on top of them.
We're loving how our speakers look and sound. They are thinner than traditional speakers, taking up less floor space. They are also lightweight, making them easy to move around or hang on the wall. They are truly like pieces of art that bring life to our home.
